This collection consists of images of ordinary and prominent individuals, families, and groups from New Jersey and elsewhere. Included are photographs, (ca. 1860-present; bulk 1880-1930) and prints (engravings and lithographs; eighteenth through the twentieth centuries). Formats include tintypes, cartes de visites, cabinet cards, postcards, matted photographs, snapshots, 8x10 and smaller photographic prints, oversized photographic prints, lithographs, and engravings. The collection includes images of Civil War soldiers, governors of New Jersey, prominent U.S. military leaders in the American Revolution and Civil War, presidents of the United States (some visiting New Jersey), mayors of Newark, businessmen, attorneys, and judges, women's clubs, board members and staff of the New Jersey Historical Society, New Jersey legislators (predominantly nineteenth century), clergy, African-Americans, political leaders, literary personalities, British figures associated with colonial New Jersey, actors and actresses appearing in New York and Newark theaters (1900-1910), Civil War veterans active in the New Jersey Grand Army of the Republic, and other identified and unidentified men, women, and children.
